"Potato day"

On Saturday we didn't go to school. The weather was fine and people tried to gather potatoes because it was the first sunny day without rain in September.Potato is the main vegetable in russian menu. We can't live without it!:)

Dear Friend,

I hope you had a successful Potato Day!

I'm curious, do children usually go to school on Saturday? We go Monday - Friday, 8:15 - 2:20. What is your schedule?

Also, was it a good crop of potatoes this year? I hope so.

Your friend,
Mrs. Yollis

Hi Linda,
In Russia children have one day off - Sunday.Classes begin at 8 and finish at 13.45. But in our lyceum senior students have very unusual time-table. Sometimes they are at school from 13 till 19, sometimes they have 2 classes a day - it depends on the subjects they choose. We have Maths,Chemistry,Biology, Physics classes.

Dear Lyudmila,
Thanks for answering back. My students were very surprised to learn that students in Russia go to school on Saturdays. We were also astonished to think about military time. You said it was 13:45 and we call it 1:45 P.M.

Thanks,
Mrs. Yollis' Class

Hi Everyone,
In Victoria, Australian we go to school between 9:00am & 3:30pm for the most part. Our school starts at 9:00am and finishes at 3:00pm because we are a special education setting. My kids would freak out if they had to go to school on Saturdays. Actually, I think I would too !

Hi Sue,
Thank you for comment! You are right,it is difficult to go to school 6 days a week .
That's why we look forward to our vacation. We have 7 days in November, 2 weeks in January,7 days in March and 3 months in summer.

Dear Lyudmila,

Thanks for answering our questions. My class in California has a few more about Potato Day.

1. We were wondering where the potatoes are grown. Is there a big community field or do people have individual gardens?

2. Where are the potatoes stored? Are the potatoes divided up on Potato Day or are they stored somewhere?

3. Finally, you said it is a main part of the menu. What are some favorite Russian potato recipes?

Thanks for sharing!

Dear friends,
Thank you very much for your interest and your questions! We'll be very glad to answer them all.

1. Almost every family in Russia has their own kitchengarden-we call it "dacha". We grow potatoes and other vegetables there .

2. The potatoes are stored in the idividual cellars.

3.The most common dishes are mashed potatoes and fried potatoes, besides potato is the main ingredient of our soups, especially Russian "borshch"-it's meat broth with vegetables, such as potatoes, carrots, cabbages, beetroots.Beetroots are a must.

Here is the recipe of our very simple dish - we call it"draniki":
take several peeled potatoes, rub them on the grater. Add some solt, soda, 1 egg and some flour. Mix it.
Oil the pan. Put it on the stove to heat it up.Take the mixture with a spoon, pour it into the pan and cook it like pancakes. Eat with sour cream.
Enjoy it!:)
